Destro #5 review

Creators: Dan Watters (Writer), Andrei Bressan (Artist), Adriano Lucas (Colorist), Rus Wooton (Letterer).

Story: Tomax and Xamot are showing Cobra Commander around their newly acquired M.A.R.S. Corporation and what they can do with it when they come across Destro and a fight breaks out.  Outside, Scrap-Iron, Chameleon and Mercer take on the Crimson Guard.  During their fight, Destro and the Twins talk about the future, all the while Cobra Commander looks on.  Finally, the Overkill system is activated but Destro keeps it from killing the Twins.  He proposes they work together, under Cobra, because of the changes the world is going to see.  They agree.  Later, Destro and Astoria Carlton-Ritz are eating dinner while Destro launches a missile to take out the Overkill system. Later, Destro and distant cousin Darklon are at their ancestral tomb and Darklon apologizes for selling M.A.R.S. but Destro says the Evader Driver needs to wear a family mask, like the first Destro did and gives him a red-hot mask to wear.   Cobra is monitoring Destro's activities and also notices something new entering the atmosphere. Cobra Commander is excited about what new thing is falling to Earth from Cybertron.

Writing: A nice conclusion to the Destro series, we see all the pieces wrap up while leading us to the next stages of the Energon Universe.  We get a great fight between Destro and the Twins (showing that none of them are just corporate executives. They are not afraid to get their hands dirty).  We also get that both Cobra Commander and Destro have many more schemes coming to fruition.

Art:  Art is nice and on point.  We get a few good Easter eggs tossed in as well (Crimson H.I.S.S. tanks, S.N.A.K.E. armors, Battle Android Troopers).  There are details throughout the fight, like Destro's mask getting some blood on it from punching Tomax and Xamot.  We get to see Darklon's mask as well, which was a cool thing I was not expecting at all in this series.  And they just make Cobra Commander really seem like this menacing presence when he's around.

Overall:  A strong finale to the Destro miniseries, Watters and Bressan really do a fantastic job closing it out.  Not only do we get a M.A.R.S. versus Extensive Enterprises fight, we get a Destro vs. Tomax and Xamot fight too.  I would say the biggest downside is, fitting into the overall Energon Universe, it's hard to tell how much time passed between the Cobra Commander series and this one.  Maybe we'll get the answer later on, who knows.

G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero #314 review

Creators : Larry Hama (writer), Andrew Krahnke (artist), Francesco Segala (colorist), Sabrin Del Grosso (flatter), Pat Brosseau (letterer) Story : In the Arabian Sea, a Tomahawk lifts off with Tunnel Rat, Tripwire and Sherlock going on a mission to rescue a 15-year-old activist/daughter of an opposition leader.   The leader of the kidnappers is also a "Fred Series" former Crimson Guardsman and operative for Cobra.  The team lands and meets up with Mongoose who was inserted the night before.  They find the tunnel system where the kidnappers are and go in guns blazing.  When they finally rescue the girl, she's upset that they ruined her plan and she goes off after the kidnappers as well; ends up the real daughter is elsewhere and the one they rescued is a special forces operative made to look like her who has a grudge against the Crimson Guardsman.  The Joes are able to talk her down from killing him and instead bringing him to trial for his crimes (beyond the kid...

Void Rivals #17 review

Void Rivals Has Secrets To Reveal! It does and it continues here with issue # 17! Void Rivals is Robert Kirkman and Lorenzo De Felici’s sci-fi comic that tells the tale of two crumbling planets linked by a “Sacred Ring” (it’s not Halo), their peoples at war for generations. When a member of each culture are stranded together, the two find they must put aside their differences if they want to survive. This story takes place in the so-called “Energon Universe”, Skybound Entertainment’s initiative to relaunch properties like Transformers and G.I. Joe within a shared universe that also happens to include the original characters and setting of Void Rivals. In this seventeenth issue, the secret of Zerta Trion is revealed, Darak has a “friendly” chat with his father, and Proximus is on the rampage! Proximus? He was cool. He was! And that continues here as him and his new kid sidekick go on a quest together. It’s unclear exactly what Proximus wishes to get out of it, but he’s clearly no longer...
